Background: | This rugged Napa Valley canyon is highlighted by volcanic ash cliffs and a streamside redwood forest. The Redwood Trail follows Ritchey Creek through second-growth redwoods and spring-blooming orchids; listen here for noisy Stellar's jays. Resident woodpecers include northern flickers, hairy, downy, Nutthall's, acorn and pileated woodpeckers. North-facing slopes shlter spotted owls, common ravens, and ruby-crowned kinglets. The Coyote Peak Trail passes through chaparral woodlands favored by California quail, western scrub-jays, black-tailed deer, and coyotes. |

The Experience: | The portion of Ritchey Creek in the park provides some of the most pristine salmonid habitat in the Napa River watershed.In the forested canyon one can see Pileated woodpecker and Spotted Owl. |

Viewing Tips: | Look for woodpeckers from March through October. Songbirds are common in spring. Spotted owls may be seen from March through August. Visitor center. Viewing mostly by trail or on horseback. |

Site Notes: | One can hike through a mosaic of habitats from 300 ft. to 2,000 ft. elvation. These include redwoods along creek, forests on the north facing slopes and canyons, and brush on the south facing slopes. |
