San Jacinto Wildlife Area - Site # 185

Background: Grasslands, boulder-strewn hills, and snow-capped peaks encircle cattail marshes on the state's first wildlife area to use reclaimed water. Ponds here are a winter stopover for bald eagles, ring-necked ducks, white faced ibises. Baird's sandpipers, and other birds. Desert cottontails, mule deer, and lesser nighthawks can be spotted near the water. Scores of songbirds migrate through, including tricolored blackbirds, mountain bluebirds, and three species of longspurs. Burrowing owls, peregrine falcons, and other wintering birds of prey hunt by day; the night hunt belongs to six species of resident owls. Burrows in the grasslands are home to endangered Stephen's kangaroo rats. Endangered coastal sage scrub on the Bernasconi Hills shelters greater roadrunners, orange-throated whiptails, and granite spiny lizards.

Viewing Tips: More than 240 bird species; second largest inland Christmas bird count in nation. Thirty-nine mammal and 38 reptile and amphibian species. Bird of prey viewing is good in fall and spring, excellent in winter. High probability of seeing waterfowl and shorebirds in winter, songbirds in winter and spring. Loof for mammals and reptiles year-round. Excellent car viewing; short hikes to wildlife.

How to Get There: From Interstate 215, take Ramona Expressway exit east to Lakeview. Turn north on Davis Road and drive 2.3 miles to DFG headquarters. From Moreno Valley on Highway 60, travel south on Theodore Street until pavement begins to turn; go straight here on dirt road (Davis Road) for 3.5 miles.
