Background: | Ponds and the Little Shasta River are bordered by volcanic knobs and juniper-scrub uplands. River and pond edges reveal wading birds, occasional river otters, mule deer, and yellow-bellied marmots. Tundra swans, double-crested cormorants, sandhill cranes, and other water birds are seen here, along with wintering rough-legges hawks and bald eagles. |

Viewing Tips: | Waterfowl watching is excellent in spring and summer; look for swans in winter. Wading birds can be seen year-round; cranes visit in spring and fall. Deer are common in winter. Marmots most active during spring and summer. Many resident predators, small mammals, birds of prey, upland birds. A REMOTE, UNIMPROVED SITE. |

How to Get There: | From Interstate 5 at Yreka, take Highway 3 east 8 miles to Montague. In town, take Ball Mountain/Little Shasta Road east 1.5 miles to entrance sign; turn right and continue 0.5 mile to DFG headquarters |
