Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge - Site # 5050
Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge is part of the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex located in northern California near the Oregon border. The Refuge Complex Visitor Center and headquarters, is located at 4009 Hill Road, Tulelake, CA 96134 and can be reached by calling (530) 667-2231

Background: Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge — nestled in Northern California, boasts an enchanting expanse of natural splendor. Covering an impressive area of 39,116 acres, maintaining secluded charm granting bird enthusiasts a tranquil sanctuary to observe many species in their natural environment. The area is significant for migrating waterfowl during spring and fall migrations.The migrating species include Snow Geese, Greater White Fronted Geese, Ross’s Geese, and Cackling Geese. The Greater White Fronted Goose is a charming bird to look at with a white patch on its face and flying in a way that is calming and captivating. The bird flies in a way of purpose making great, loud calls as it goes along. Other areas of interest include access to the Sheepy Ridge Trail as well as the Discovery Marsh Trail. Along the Discovery Marsh Trail you will find yourself in a scenic adventure walk. Going through the beautiful wetlands, observing different species of animals and peaceful water reflections. The Tulelake Wildlife Refuge stands as a pristine haven of natural wonder in Northern California. Visitors can immerse themselves in observing wildlife and taking a hike along the trails. No matter what you’re seeking for your visit the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge offers a truly enriching experience for all who adventure out.

The Habitat: Local habitat types include uplands vegetated with grasses and shrubs such as sagebrush, and wetlands such as marshes. The refuge also includes about 19,000 acres of cropland leased to growers. Crops include potato, onion, horseradish, alfalfa, and cereals.

The Experience: A variety of trails are open to hikers, paddlers, and vehicles. These trails include the Sheepy Ridge, Discovery Marsh, the Wildlife Observation points, Canoe trail and, Auto Tour Route.

Viewing Tips: Take the easy hike on Sheepy Ridge Trail so then visitors will have a full viewing point of the entire refuge.

Site Notes: Dogs are permitted. Pets must be on a 6 ft. leash at all times. Please clean up after your dog.

Birders at Tule Lake NWR Discovery Marsh Trail
There is no fee to visit. However, an annual recreation pass is required if you are planning to hunt on any part of the Tule Lake or Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuges.

How to Get There: From California: Head north on Interstate 5 to Weed, CA, then northeast 45 miles on Highway 97 to the Oregon Border. Take Stateline Road (Hwy. 161) east towards Tulelake, CA to Hill Road. Turn south on Hill Road. The visitor center is located 4 miles south on Hill Rd. From Oregon: Headquarters is located 20 miles south of Klamath Falls, Oregon via Hwy. 97 south to Stateline Rd (Hwy 161) east towards Tulelake, CA to Hill Road. Turn south on Hill Road. The visitor center is located 4 miles south on Hill Road. Or from Hwy. 39 south from Klamath Falls to Merril Pit Road, follow the signs from there to the visitor center located on Hill Road.
